The Ilkley Twinning Association is a community organisation dedicated to fostering friendship and understanding between the people of Ilkley and its twin town, Coutances, in Normandy, France. The twinning relationship, which began informally after the Second World War between the towns’ secondary schools, was formally established in 1969.
The Association works to strengthen these cross-channel links by encouraging exchanges and visits between various community groups, clubs, and individuals in both towns. It organises a lively programme of activities, including:
Civic visits: Annual visits where officials and residents of each town take turns hosting and exploring their twin.
Group exchanges: Facilitating visits between clubs and organisations such as choirs, sports teams, and schools.
Cultural events: The Association organises events like quiz nights, concerts, and social gatherings to celebrate French culture and raise funds for future visits.
The Ilkley Twinning Association plays a vital role in promoting international cooperation and strengthening the cultural bonds that have existed between the two towns for decades.
